“A Place for Everyone.”
That’s our creed and we believe that includes everyone in the Shorthorn family, from fullblood, purebred and Shorthorn Plus breeders and exhibitors.
As the newly reformed Oregon Junior Shorthorn Association (OJSA), we're working to build a strong, inclusive foundation. One of the most important steps we can take is updating the Oregon State Fair Premium Book to reflect the current American Shorthorn Association (ASA) guidelines, which recognize Shorthorn Plus cattle (50% to 93.74% Shorthorn) as part of the breed's show structure.
We’re asking the Oregon State Fair to allow Shorthorn Plus cattle exhibited in the 2025 AOB division to count toward Shorthorn numbers, helping us maintain both a Shorthorn and a Shorthorn Plus show in 2026 and beyond. Each would have its own division within the breed show, ensuring fair and appropriate competition for all.
Shorthorn Plus cattle deserve a place within their breed family, not in the All Other Breeds (AOB) division.
Purebreds and Shorthorn Plus cattle wouldn’t compete against each other. Each would have their own division under the Shorthorn umbrella. You can show in both division for the breed show or one or the other exclusively.
This mirrors other fair structures, including the Western Idaho Fair and the Washington State Fair, which already list Shorthorn and Shorthorn Plus together but divided by type.
It strengthens the AOB division by removing Shorthorn Plus cattle and makes both breed-specific and general competitions more focused and fair.
It ensures we follow the national ASA rules, setting the Oregon State Fair up for future growth and credibility.
We can’t do this without community support. Here’s how you can take action:
Join the Oregon Junior Shorthorn Association.
Send a letter or email to the Oregon State Fair leadership and beef superintendent asking to open a discussion about this positive change:

This is a crucial moment for our association and the future of the Shorthorn breed in Oregon. With your voice and support, we can create a fair, inclusive, and progressive show environment and "a place for everyone."
